剧情简介: In the wake of TV OFFAL,Victor Lewis-Smith casts his eye over various vintage TV and cinema ads (with several more contemporary efforts occasionally thrown in) with his familiar but welcome wry comments.Like his double-barrelled moniker,Victor Lewis-Smith has always been a supremely talented and inventive comic word-smith,and his follow-up to the above was originally shown at a somewhat earlier time than his previous series,but is none the less savage despite of this.The regular bad taste bits are not quite as frequent as before(perhaps because of the earlier timeslot),and along with his amusingly dismissive thoughts,the aged footage used is rather delightful and fascinating.The most remarkable find was some audio featuring an irascible Orson Welles becoming more and more agitated over basic grammar while recording a voice-over for a peas advert.This was perhaps the funniest part of the series,hearing an authentic genius like Welles losing the plot over seemingly such trivial matters quite extraordinary.But this is not to say VLS\' witty interjections were not of comparable merit.Far from it.The great shame is that VLS has rather curtailed similar work in recent years,and prefers to work more behind the scenes,and write his TV column for the London Evening Standard.This is a pity;he has certainly made enemies over the years with his no-nonsense,calling a spade a spade opinions on those working in TV,in front and behind the camera,and various executives.Perhaps the very fact that these views are expressed with such dazzling,supremely stylish prose, (meaning victims of his ire are haplessly unable to respond in a remotely similar fashion) mean they can only retaliate in a physical,rather than verbal tit-for-tat in conspiring to prevent him producing unassuming mini masterpieces like this.But this isn\'t unusual;inferior talents have always been grossly jealous, intimidated, and reduced to size by vastly superior ones.RATING:7 and a half out of 10.
